The venerable publication known as “the voice of news publishing since 1884” has chosen Seattle Times Publisher Frank Blethen as its 2020 Publisher of the Year, from a field of 60 candidates nationwide.
The announcement was made by Editor & Publisher Publisher Mike Blinder during the recent America’s Newspapers PIVOT virtual conference, with these comments:
“Blethen, 75, has been publisher of The Times since 1985. He is a fourth-generation member of the Blethen family, which founded the Times in 1896. In his nomination, Blethen was recognized for his longtime efforts to stop the defunding of newsrooms, expand newsroom jobs, prevent more news deserts and incentivize community ownership of newspapers. In 2019, Frank launched the Save the Free Press Initiative and continues to be an advocate by working with other news publishers to ensure the Local Journalism Sustainability Act passes.” A fuller profile will appear in the November issue of E&P.
