I’m pleased to report that Gary Meyers, head honcho at BlackWing Creative (nee Hodgson Meyers) is on the mend after a scary and severe body-surfing accident at Hapuna Beach on the Big Island of Hawaii in early December.
He has no memory of the accident, but apparently he got hit by a rogue wave that crashed his head into lava rocks under the surf. He suffered a broken neck, was unconscious in the water for more than five minutes, and, in his words, “essentially drowned.”
Fortunately, there were two ER doctors vacationing on the same beach and they, along with two local lifeguards, rushed to him and began performing CPR, while recognizing that he had a broken neck. He was taken to the emergency room at Waimea on the Big Island and then airlifted to Honolulu, where he suffered a cardiac arrest and was revived once again. He wavered between life and death in the ICU for the next several days.
More than a week later, he was able to speak for the first time since the accident. He and wife, Karen, son, Steffan, and daughter, Kyla, flew home for Christmas. Gary will be in a neck brace until the neck fracture, which was a lot more severe than first diagnosed, fuses and heals. He is expected to make a full recovery.
Said Gary, “I’m profoundly grateful and thankful and humbled. I have no doubt that angels intervened to bring me back to life”…
