John Joly, Veteran Newspaperman & Marketer

The Seattle marcomm community has lost another stellar member, with the death of John Joly on March 1. He was born in 1939.

John spent most of his working life in the newspaper business, beginning with a paper route for The Detroit News in his native Detroit. After high school, he became a union printer at The News, and later served in the U.S. Army in France. After earning a B.A. in Journalism at the University of Detroit, John worked as a printer and then a copywriter in the promotion department at the Detroit Free Press. That was followed by 10 years in marketing at The Miami Herald.

In 1976, John came to Seattle as the marketing director of the former Seattle Post-Intelligencer. He also served as a marketing consultant to parent Hearst Corp. and other newspaper groups.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Judy, and their three children, Jennifer, Jim and Janine and five grandchildren.

John was a member of the Seattle Rotary Club, the Washington Athletic Club, served as president of City Club and was a founding member of Marketing Communications Executives International (MCEI).

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30am Saturday, March 14 at St. James Cathedral, 804 Ninth Ave. in Seattle.
