Projects & Places

Whatever your level of expertise in dealing with the digital-media phenomenon, you need to get your hands on a copy of Williams-Helde’s Digital Media Playbook, authored by media director Steven Clough. A pdf of the 40-page 2012 edition is online at williams-helde.com/digitalmediaplaybook/. It begins with a history dating back to the first print ad in 1704, published in the Boston News-Letter, followed by the billboard in 1835, the first magazine ads in 1909 and the first radio ads in 1922 and 1941, respectively.  The nine chapters cover the spectrum from media buying to measuring and tracking and conclude with a complete glossary of digital and social media terms… WCP Solutions has committed to warehouse space in the Freeport Center in Clearfield, UT, just north of Salt Lake City. The new space will become the company’s 13th distribution facility, complementing those in Idaho,  California, Oregon, Montana, Alaska and Washington. The company offers a wide range of products and services, from commercial and digital printing papers to janitorial supplies and equipment… Hemlock Printers has installed its second HP Indigo digital offset press at its Burnaby, BC plant. The HP 7500 is the most technologically advanced, high-volume digital printer in the market, giving Hemlock the capability to deliver an array of ink and substrate options on digital products, according to VP/customer service Richard Kouwenhoven… Hornall Anderson has done branding work for The Limited’s new “eloquii”—a product line of fashions for the full-figured woman. The agency worked with The Limited team to create a brand experience that touches all aspects of the new offering, beginning with strategy and positioning. The work involved developing the name and identity and messaging for their new e-commerce site at www.eloquii.com. HA also assisted Garlic Jim’s in introducing a new gluten-free pizza product. Rather than the typical “beauty shots” of pizza consumers are used to seeing, HA used atabloid-style approach on the packaging copy (examples at right), using humorous slogans and tongue-in-cheek messaging that places an emphasis on  “owning” and “embracing” the gluten-free pizza, rather than being apologetic for it. Distribution is currently localized in Western Washington, with hopes of expanding  regionally and nationally soon… GA Creative completed design and production of the 2011 annual report for Northwest Kidney Centers. The Bellevue-based agency is revitalizing the organization’s brand as it celebrates its 50th Anniversary in 2012, with plans to increase community knowledge and support for kidney care. The Northwest Kidney Centers are the first dialysis provider anywhere to celebrate a half-century of service… Jones Advertising is creating more than a dozen events to help Ben Bridge Jeweler celebrate it’s 100th birthday in 2012. All will feature the Jones-designed anniversary logo and the new tagline, Celebrating a Century. The promotion includes a wide range of paid media and public relations, including a big push in social media, according to principal Mark Jones. The social media campaign is highlighted by The Ben Bridge $100,000 Wedding of the Century Contest on Facebook, focusing on Bridge’s bridal and engagement jewelry.  The contest runs through Valentine’s Day and even before it had been promoted it received 1,500 entries, with some entries receiving more than 500 votes from friends. To learn more about the contest, visit Facebook.com/BenBridgeJeweler. Jones is teamed with Media Plus+ for media planning and buying services.

In other news, Jones Advertising was chosen after a competitive review to handle The Puyallup Fair advertising in 2012. Strategic Media Alignment will provide the media-buying services.

PrintWest’s Innovative New Press

“Bigger, faster, stronger, greener!” Sounds like Pete Carroll describing his remodeled Seahawks football team.

Instead, those are all terms that apply to PrintWest’s capabilities after installing a new Komori LSX 29, using H-UV inks.

The press gives the growing Woodinville plant the capability to run larger sheets (24 x 29 1/2) faster (up to 16,000 sheets an hour) with a strong guarantee that the fully automated press will provide consistent, high-quality print jobs.

CEO Phil Parrish said the automated feature constantly monitors all conditions during the press run along with cutting make-ready time and paper consumption by up to 70%. He points with particular pride to the fact that the press uses 75% percent less power than a conventional UV press, “making us  the ‘greenest’ printer around.”

The H-UV ink capabiities offer a variety of benefits, Parrish said, including instant ink drying, more accurate press checks and “strikethrough” finishes that create truly unique pieces with the “wow” factor.

Their 16-page “Why Print” promo piece, printed using the H-UV technology on the new press, took multiple First Place awards in the 2011 PPI Print ROCKS! awards competition, including the “People’s Choice” award.

Parish, left above, and co-owner Charlie Wozow, right, have been partners since 2003 in the company Wozow founded in 1994. Since moving to Woodinville in 2000, the facility has been gradually increased from 18,000 to the present 32,500 square feet.

He and Charlie are embarking  on a marketing campaign to take advantage of the nearby Woodinville Wine Country amenities and promote their new capabilities.

“The Komori press was a big financial commitment,” Phil said. “But—as they say—no guts, no glory!”
